Jump into the world of experimental filmmaking with Scratch Animation!
Made possible by the Government of Alberta, Scratch Animation is part of our FAVA EXPO event. This event is FREE to all but designed for youth ages 13-18. Registration in one of our FAVA EXPO workshops comes with FREE lunch.
Scratch animation is a form of experimental, camera-less animation made by physically altering film stock. Instead of using a camera to capture images, participants will draw, scratch, etch, or paint directly onto 16mm film strips. By manipulating the film’s emulsion, the light-sensitive layer that typically records images, participants will produce abstract or representational animations that play as moving images when projected.
This hands-on process allows for endless creativity: textures, shapes, and colours come alive frame by frame, often resulting in vibrant, rhythmic, and highly personal films. Scratch animation is celebrated for its DIY spirit, tactile approach, and roots in avant-garde and experimental cinema. It’s a fun, accessible way to explore animation without needing expensive gear.
This workshop is led by industry professional aAron Munson, participants will gain inside knowledge on the independent filmmaking industry and experimental filmmaking.
